The 5-Digit Odometer Rollover - A Specific Classic Vehicle Interpretation Trap
Many classic vehicles were equipped with five-digit odometers that display mileage only up to 99,999 before returning to zero. A 5-digit odometer displays up to 99,999 miles and then rolls over to 00,000. The mechanical counter resets. The vehicle continues accumulating mileage from zero, with no indication on the odometer that a rollover occurred.
This creates an interpretation problem when reading a mileage sequence in a history report. A sequence of recorded readings might look like this: 40,000 miles, then 60,000 miles, then 80,000 miles, then 10,000 miles. A buyer seeing the drop from 80,000 to 10,000 might assume the odometer was rolled back as part of a fraud. That interpretation may be wrong.
If the vehicle rolled over the 100,000-mile mark between the 80,000-mile reading and the 10,000-mile reading, the true accumulated mileage at the time of the 10,000-mile reading is 110,000 miles. The odometer showed 10,000 because it had mechanically reset at 100,000. There is no tampering involved. The instrument simply does not display more than five digits.
The distinction between a rollover and a rollback is important because they have opposite implications. A rollover means the vehicle has more miles than the post-reset reading suggests. A rollback means someone altered the odometer to display fewer miles than the vehicle has actually accumulated. A mileage dip in the report does not tell you which situation applies.
